Resident Evil 4 Dining Hall Puzzle Solution

16 August 2026 | 29

The Resident Evil 4 remake continues the series tradition of integrating environmental riddles that test a player's observation skills alongside intense combat sequences. During Chapter 9, players find themselves navigating the opulent Grand Hall within the castle, tasked with tracking down three distinct animal heads to unlock the path forward. One of these critical pieces is the Serpent Head, which remains locked away behind a cage in the adjacent dining area until a specific seating riddle is solved.

Analyzing the Grand Hall Portrait Clues

Upon entering the dining quarters, your immediate attention will likely be drawn to the locked cage holding the key item. To find the solution to this obstacle, players must bypass the dining tables entirely and walk directly toward the back wall of the room. Here, you will discover two large portraits depicting the former lord and lady of the castle enjoying separate formal meals.

These detailed paintings are not mere set dressing; they serve as the literal blueprints for solving the puzzle. By studying the specific layout of cutlery, glassware, bread, and bottles in each portrait, you can determine exactly where Leon and Ashley need to sit. Success requires matching the real-world place settings on the long tables with the exact arrangements shown in the artwork.

Finding the Correct Seat for Ashley

The portrait of the lady indicates a remarkably sparse table setting compared to her male counterpart. Her designated spot features a basic set of cutlery, a clean napkin placed neatly in the middle of her plate, and a single empty wine glass. Crucially, her setting completely lacks any side dishes, bread rolls, or wine bottles nearby.

To fulfill these conditions, inspect the table setups closest to the entrance of the room. You will find the exact match on the right side of the southern table structure. Stand next to this specific chair and use the partner command to order Ashley to take her seat before moving on to Leon's location.

Positioning Leon and Unlocking the Reward

Leon's required seating arrangement is much more elaborate, as depicted in the portrait of the castle lord. The man's setting consists of three full sets of knives and forks, a napkin, a full bottle of wine next to his glass, and a small side dish containing a fresh bread roll. This luxurious setup can be found on the opposite side of the dining area, specifically on the left side of the northern table closest to the paintings.

Walk Leon over to this spot and interact with the chair to sit down alongside your companion. Once both characters are properly positioned at their respective tables, interact with the small dinner bell resting in front of you. Leon and Ashley will ring their bells in unison, triggering a short cutscene that automatically lowers the cage bars and grants you access to the coveted Serpent Head piece.
